10:51 pm - new

Hi all! I don't know how active this community is but I thought I'd join anyway, cuz I've got the "horse chatter" itch and everyone else is sick of talking to me about it. ;) I competed English (hunter) and Western in college (IHSA - I'm horseless and poor). I'm much better at Western though, and I'm pretty sure it's only because I like it better. I'm currently looking for a Western barn near me that I can afford lessons at, but alas, Northern Virginia is mostly English saddle only. :.(

Hi! I just got an email saying that I am the new maintainer of this community? I suppose I am happy to do it, but I am wondering how my name came about & what the heck this means I have to do? Lol...

Thanks. ♥

12:12 am - Help!

Okay, so... there's a horse in my barn for sale, and I posted it on on the "equestrian" community, and then someone had the audacity to link to it on the "bad_riding" community... where people proceeded to completely bash western pleasure, as well as Quarter Horses in general.  Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7PnxrJakio (He's only been ridden 5x since August or September, and clearly needs a little tuning up, BUT he's still pretty decent.  He has a tendency to drop his shoulder and fall apart a little at the lope, especially going to the left, but he has over 30 AQHA points with very limited showing).  Anyway, here's the post where all the bashing occured: http://community.livejournal.com/bad_riding/44374.html

Including me, there were only THREE people defending WP and QH's in general... and a few that were borderline.  I'm not asking anyone to add fuel to the fire, but I was just wondering what you guys all thought about this.  I know it's best to just ignore it (which I have), but it's extremely frustrating.  That community is made up of people who are full of stereotypes and most likely have never even been on a pleasure horse in their life.  WP is often the victim of slander and misconstrued ideas made by biased people who have no idea what the sport is really about... how do you deal with comments like those?

1:22 pm - Founder???

Ok, so my 20 year old horse foundered this year and I can't seem to win. I have had him off pasture for a good 4 weeks, and he is doing amazing. Thought he didn't founder bad I am worried. I have been giving him grass hay and he has lost a lot of weight. when I put him back to pasture though, he eventually gets lame again after about a week of only being out for at most an hour a day if that!! Not sure if there is anything else going on, and if anyone has expereinced this. Also, the spring grass is gone no? And can I put him on grain to get weight before winter? Its right around the corner!
Any thoughts please let me know!

9:50 pm - Horse For Sale

JJ is a wonderful show horse, who would try anything for you.  He can do English and western, but his best thing is showmanship.  Last year I took first place at every show.  The reason that he is for sale is because my sister has a Quarter Horse/ dun and JJ is a Paint.  We wanted to try some breed shows, so I decided to sell JJ to get a Quarter Horse because there really are no Paint shows near us.

Luke At Me dies tragically....

~ March 17th, 2006 ~
With heartfelt sympathy we regret to announce the tragic death of Luke At Me. Luke died Friday, morning turned out in his pen after some complications with his normal collection session, at Happy Valley Ranch in Mayer, Arizona March 17th, 2006.

Luke was a well-loved Congress and World Champion Hunter Under Saddle stallion. He was also All Time Leading NSBA Sire of English money earners. He will be sorely missed.

It would be great if our readers would please send condolences to His owners: Ray Roles and Nancy Sue Ryan this is a very hard loss for them, and details are being worked out about rebreeds, etc which will be will be posted at a later date.

Now is a time to Please remember them in prayer. NancySue has been through a horrific year. As you may know, her dear vet and friend, Sharon Gaston is still in a coma (since January 1st) from an injury inflicted trying to help her horse escape the fires that were threatening Show Stop Farms in Nocona, Texas.

Then, just recently, a tornado swept past the outskirts of Nancy Sue's ranch and blew out some windows in her barn and trailer. Two horse's were injured, in the storm, one fatally.

When we talked to Nancy Sue, we couldn't help but feel the pain of her series of losses, yet be proud of her for continuing to press on and look for the good in life, which will necessarily include her other fine stallion, Fabuluke. If you have a minute, send her a word of encouragement via email or a note in the mail. Even flowers would be nice in the wake of this most unfortunate loss. Luke died before being collected for her own mares that day. Her conventional mail address is Nancy Sue Ryan, 2581 N. Greenbrier, Nocona, TX 76255.

4:01 pm - Question!

Has anyone ever heard of a horse dropping weight because of a mineral block? My horse has been dropping weight over the past month and I've done everything I can think of to correct it, but it's not working. A guy at the barn said that he had read that when there is a trace mineral block sometimes the horses body will think it's getting enough nutrients and won't properly digest the hay. Anyone heard of anything like this? Thanks guys for all your help (not just this time, but every time!)

Cross to _aqha

Last weekend, I went to my Equestrian Team show with my gelding. We had two classes, showmanship and in-hand trail. In the morning, I wanted to win, but something happened right before showmanship that made us do very badly. After that, I had a "whatever happens" attitude.

So, in in-hand trail, Chase (my gelding) was happy and ready to go. Yet by the time we trotted over the poles, I knew we wouldn't win. When it came time for us to side pass over the poles (which he has done before), he was saying, "I don't want to..." After asking a couple of times, I just took my thumb and pushed him over, as though it was just a spur.

Right after that, we came to a bridge. My horse is fearless, and we had been working with a bridge at home all week. Yet he just put his hoof on it, stepped down. Hoof up, step down... I'm like, "You know what a bridge is, quit being a brat!" So I did something that I guess isn't very politically correct........

The judge yelled at me to go on to the next maneuver, and I'm like, "Okay..." So I start walking, and then hear a clop-clop-clop. He was walking over the bridge! We executed the rest of the pattern perfectly, I was so proud of him. And by the end he was a happy boy, and had totally forgotten about the incident.

Well, my "coach" had to give me a talking to... about trust and bonding, or whatever. (I already have that with my Chase!) But people were saying I shouldn't have done that in the ring, and one of my friends even said I made an ass of myself. Yeah, I know etiquette isn't to school your horse at competition, but it's an equestrian team show... I was the only person in the ring at the time, so I didn't disturb anybody.

Someone was saying that if I didn't care that I wasn't going to win, I should've just gone around the bridge.... But the thing is, I have ridden ring sour horses. I tell you, it is much more embarrassing riding a ring sour horse than reprimanding in the class. It's like you're at your horse's whim. So, naturally, I don't want my horse to become ring sour! He's smart, he'll figure out that he can get away with anything if a judge is watching.

I know AQHA pro trainers aren't afraid to get after their horses in the ring, so I was surprised at others' reactions... What do you guys think?

9:06 pm - bitless bridle

Does anyone have any experience with a bitless bridle?

Are they as good as they say they are and does a horse learn to respond quickly. Are they safe? If anyone has anything good or bad to say about this bridle, i would love to hear it, cause i'm just really fed up with bits, thanks in advance.

I took more pics of my two new ponies, these ones are much better than the first ones i took cause it wasnt such a crappy day the last couple days. I hope you don't mind but I posted some pics of my nonequine babies aswell.

Question for Hackney owners or people that have worked with them. Tommy has a really adorable head bobbing that he does when I lead him around. Is that a hackney trait or is it just because hes not yet trained. Hes a silly boy too, so he may just be being silly!

Warning ~ Alot of pics! X-Posted to several places! Cuteness overload!

5:59 pm - AQHA Shows

For those of you who show at AQHA shows, I have a few questions....

First off: indiviual membership. My membership (and horse) are registered under [last name] Kathyrn or Cynthia. Do I have to have a card that is just in my name? And, do I have my horse re-registered under just my name?

Secondly: Amature/Novice Amature. I know that I have to get my amature card. But, since I've never shown at a recongized event, how do I go about getting my novice permits? Most importantly, how long does it generally take for the AQHA to send the papers/permits after I've submitted my paperwork?

This is the first thing I saw when I got to the barn on Monday and I almost crapped myself. I really thought Mojo was dead. Especially when I walked in the stall with food and he didn't even lift his head.
